Nobody gave Connacht much of a chance in Friday evenings Amlin Challenge Cup game, but the boys from the Emerauld Isle had other thoughts. Montpellier may have learned a huge lesson in respect, Connacht may be at the bottom of the Magners League but still riding high on last years GRAND SLAM they were not going to roll over just because they were playing away from home.

Connacht had never played in the new stadium, but Montpellier had always been reasonably lucky for them, and you cannot beat the luck of the Irish!!!

The match started with all the pressure coming from Montpellier, but Connacht were ready to ride out the storm they defended like demons and were never out of the game, in fact out scoring the home side by 3 tries to 1 a mean feat by any side.

Once again Montpellier showed very little idea and their thinking sterile, far to many Gary Owens and with the Irish fullback catching everything in sight we were just giving them the ball to attack with. This they did and some shabby defending by the backs let Connacht over the try line 3 times a double for the winger Carr and the 3rd try coming from the center Ta'auso.

With 20 mins. to go and the score in favour of Connacht 22-19, Montpellier had more or less pitched their tents on the Irish try line, but with their vision blinkered their only thoughts was to score the winning try. they had started the game with a Todeschini drop goal, why not take a leaf out of Jonny Wilco's book and finish the game of with a couple of the same.

The chances were there, but relentlessly Montpellier battered the Irish line that Fighting Spirit raised its ugly head and the boys from the Emerauld Isle held on till the end with some heroic defending.

Montpellier will need to take all their opponents seriously, and now realise that the Irish never go down without a fight. Connacht must be congratulate on their success, and sit firmly on the top of pool 2 of the Amlin Challenge Cup, Montpellier however must get their act together, as next Saturday we have the visit of TOP 14 leaders Clermont and we all know the previous years results.
